Maycock's big day at plate leads Baseball

Thursday, May 5, 2016

The Newington baseball team continues to mash its way to wins, this time coming through with two home runs on the way to a 3-2 win over a pesky Hall club Wednesday in Newington.

Ben Maycock and Nick Guadarrama homered for the Indians, now 9-3 on the year. Maycock added a double as well.

“We’ve been swinging the bats well all year,” Newington coach Ben Alaimo said. “We had a couple good pitchers who held us down, but we’ve been good most of the year. Both of the homers (Wednesday) were on two-strike pitches. There’s things to clean up, but I’m really happy offensively and really happy to have a bounce-back win.”

Newington was coming off a tough loss to New Britain, but showed toughness to pull one out against Hall.

“New Britain did a great job against us in our last game but we showed a lot of poise to bounce back today,” Alaimo said. “That’s not always easy in high school baseball. This was a good win, they always play us tough.”

Sophomore Joey Zawisza was tough himself, leading Newington to the win on less than 80 pitches over seven innings, fanning nine while allowing five hits. Cooper Johnson had two hits in the win.
