 Newington

Coach: Ben Alaimo (2nd year)

Last year: 12-10, lost in second round of Class LL tournament

Key losses: Bryant Morander, Kyle Bellizzi, Pat Meucci

Key returnees: Nick Sanford (sr. c), Isaiah Rivera (sr. of) Andrew Deguzis (sr. inf.) Chad Korte (sr. p), Marcus Guadarrama (sr. p), Joe Almeida (sr. 1b), Matt Harackiewicz (sr. of), Matt DeDeominicus (sr. of)

Outlook: The Indians haven’t missed a beat under new coach Ben Alaimo, as Newington picked up 11 regular season wins last year before heading to Danbury and winning a road game in the first round of the tournament. It will be tough to replace players like Morander, Bellizzi and Meucci, three big offensive threats and a pitcher in Morander who stole the show last year, dominating early and getting Newington on track. This year that task will fall to Korte and Guadarrama, two seniors who might not have as much experience on the mound but will each have the mettle of a veteran. Offensively and in the field the Indians are led by a number of multi-sport athletes in Rivera and Harackiewicz as well as Guadarrama. The Indians will be athletic in the outfield as well as experienced, but the infield will have a touch of youth to it. If Newington can find enough pitching, the rest of the pieces should fall into place for another good season. Newington and its main rival Southington both could be factors at the end of the year, meaning their May 23 showdown could be particularly interesting.
