Baseball wins with Rivera walk off HR

Thursday, May 8, 2014

NEWINGTON — The Newington baseball team knows what it is like to be on the wrong end of a close game, but the Indians used their experience in tight contests to their advantage Wednesday afternoon in Newington.

With the Indians and Bristol Eastern tied 1-1 and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Newington No. 9 hitter Matt DeDominicis reached on a single and stole second base. Up next was the leadoff hitter Isaiah Rivera, who ended it with one swing of the bat.

Rivera sent a 3-1 pitch from Eastern’s Tom Curtin over the left-center field wall, giving the Indians a big 3-1 victory.

“We’ve had four games that have been one run or extra inning games with two others where we had the opportunity to win in the seventh. Finally we were able to pull one out,” Newington coach Ben Alaimo said. “The ball bounced our way today. It speaks to the character of our team. We are getting more and more comfortable in close games and it allows them to be successful. We’ve been on the other side of this, so it sure feels nice to get one to go our way.”

DeDominicis went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored in the game while Nick Sanford also had a double for Newington. Pat Donahue pitched a complete game and got the win for the Indians, who are now 4-7. The Lancers drop to 6-6 on the year.
