Baseball advances to 2nd round

Newington 2, Fairfield Prep 0: The Indians got another complete game gem from Joey Zawisza, his sixth complete game victory of the year, to advance to the second round in Class LL. Even better, the Indians earned another home game today when No. 18 Xavier shocked No. 2 Hamden. The 15th-seeded Indians had to take care of their own business first, however, and Zawisza delivered. Not only was he dominant on the mound to move to 7-1 for the year, but he drove in a big run in the fifth with a bases-loaded walk. Nicholas Gallicchio started the scoring with a RBI in the second.

“You never know what can happen in the tournament,” Newington coach Ben Alaimo said. “We’re thrilled to be able to play at home in the second round. There’s only 16 teams left and we’re hoping to be one of the final eight.”
