Baseball's season ends against Xavier

 Xavier 5, Newington 2: Nick Guadarrama threw three innings of stellar relief, but the Indians were down 5-0 early and never recovered fully on the way to a loss in the Class LL second round.

“We had a great opportunity and that’s all you can ask for,” Newington coach Ben Alaimo said of his team’s second home game in the tournament, which came after Xavier beat Hamden.

Xavier has been beating everyone lately, however. It won its final regular season game to reach the postseason, then downed the second-seed in the first round.

“Unfortunately we lost to a team which has something special going on,” Alaimo said. “But I’m proud of my guys and looking forward to next year with the kids we have returning while wishing my seniors the best.”

Guadarrama and Cooper Johnson had the Newington hits.
